“If you’re having a heart attack, or your family’s health history is tied to a specific drug, they’re not getting the benefits of Viagra.”—The Associated Press
Viagra (sildenafil) and other drugs for men with heart conditions may have fewer side effects than some other medications. But some people who take these drugs don’t think they can safely take Viagra, and even some who do. The Associated Press’
“The fact is, men who take Viagra don’t realize that they’re not getting the same benefits,” Dr. John Korsak, a urologist at New York’s Staten Island University Hospital, said in an interview, in a about the condition he was discussing.
When asked about side effects, Korsak said, “I don’t think it’s something we should focus on. I don’t think it’s something you should be concerned about.”
Many of the side effects are similar to those of other popular drugs, including some that are taken for fungal infections, and which can cause dizziness, nausea, and chest pain, nausea, and diarrhea, nausea. And some of the side effects, like feeling sick or having a stomach ache, may be related to not taking the drug for the full length of time prescribed, Korsak said.
For Korsak, who has no prescription, the problem wasn’t as bad as many people think. He was shocked and angry that Viagra was not the best treatment for his condition.
“I took Viagra because I had a heart attack,” he said in an interview. “I took it because I was sick. I didn’t realize it was killing my wife or kids. It was the only treatment for my heart condition.”
Korsak also said Viagra was a bad idea, as the pills could cause dangerous side effects, like dizziness or nausea and diarrhea. He also said many other drugs work similarly, including some that are also used to treat HIV.
“I had no idea that the FDA had approved Viagra for this purpose,” he said. “I was shocked and angry that Viagra was not the best drug for my condition. I took Viagra because I had a heart attack, and I wasn’t sure what to do about it. I had no idea it was the only treatment for my heart condition.”
Korsak said doctors should also be careful about prescribing medications “that are known to interact with nitrates, and that’s what we are doing. We’re doing an investigation and we’re going to see how that works out.”
Korsak said the FDA had approved Viagra in the U. S. for erectile dysfunction a few years back, but they didn’t prescribe it for more than a year. In 2012, the FDA approved the use of Viagra for erectile dysfunction. That was before Viagra was used to treat HIV.
There are other uses for Viagra, including a prescription in the U. S., for erectile dysfunction drugs like Cialis (Tadalafil), Levitra (Vardenafil), and Stendra (Avanafil).
Korsak said the FDA has not approved use of Viagra to treat any other conditions, but he has not seen any results in his own health. And he said he’s had no problems since starting Viagra treatment.
“I’m not a doctor and I don’t use Viagra. I took it for fun,” Korsak said. “I have no problem with fun. But the guy was sick. He had stomach problems. He was taking nitrates. He was dehydrated. He was in pain. He was sick.”
Korsak said the drugs can sometimes cause serious side effects. He said, for example, that may go away when you stop taking them. But he said he’s not sure why. He said the side effects are often the result of a combination of drugs.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a nationwide recall of several drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction. The FDA announced this week that the drug was no longer available on the market in the United States, and was removed from the market following the expiration of its patent for Viagra. The FDA noted that there were a number of drugs being recalled because they were associated with adverse effects like gastrointestinal upset and increased risk of heart attacks. In addition, a recall for Cialis was issued in August, and the drug was recalled for a heart attack and a stroke that occurred in August of this year.
